Should brogue laces be tied off at the front of the leg or the side

Some bands prefer to tie off their laces at the front of the leg, some prefer the side, is there a correct standard

I’ve seen it done both ways and I’m not aware of a ‘standard’ or ‘correct’ way. My personal prefference is to tie them at the front. I think it looks a bit ‘crowded’ with flashes and laces on the side of the leg.

On a related note, I’ve also seen some people make a few twists in the laces at the shoe, rather than making a 1/2 knot before bringing it around back of the leg.

Yes there is a correct way. As a competitive drum major dress is VERY important. RSPBA guidelines on standards of dress state that laces should be pulled tight, twist the laces together 3 times at the mouth of the shoe, pull laces around leg, cross once at rear and tie horizontally in the mid point at the front of the leg. On both legs laces, bows and tails should be symmetrical to each other. Hope this helps as I am sick of seeing people with their laces twisted and tied at the tops of their socks! A little bit of guidance goes a long way in making people look presentable!

There isn’t a correct way.However some competition authorities decide that certain things should be done in a cerain way, and that is their right of doing something,so if you are competing in an event, then you should follow the guidelines of the organistation.
HOWEVER lots of people don’t take part in these, so they can wear the bows tied front or side, or indeed wherever they like.
I have to say I’m not a fan of ghillie brogues and laces at all, but I do despair sometimes at the number of peple who try to enforce “rules” when hardly any exist.

For someone that that doesn’t like ghillie brogues or laces, you’ve certainly had a good rant. I was by no means suggesting that everyone who wears ghillie brogues competes, I was only looking at it from a competing drum major’s point of view where our aim is to look as presentable as possible. If somebody wants to look like a badly wrapped wool bag, that’s their prerogative. I was only giving the advice that was asked for. Despair all you like I’m by no way an enforcer of rules but do like to see people who wear our national dress at least put a bit of thought into how they may look. I get the impression that if someone asked the question “Is there a correct way to wear the kilt, pleats at the front or pleats at the back?” You would probably tell them any way they like rather than try and help them look good and presentable.

Interesting comments Shooey, it was hardly a rant, merely making the point that Ghillie brogues and the method of tying them is open to variation, and there isn’t as you did suggest a “correct “ way of tying them,(outside of competitions)
The original poster said some bands….. not all bands!
If you actually take time to have a quick look at a selection of pictures you will find there are many way of tying them, and there are many instructions from various learned sources which conflict in their advice.

You point about the pleats is actually rather silly, and out of place here
